A British 19th Century Carron Company cast-iron fireplace damper with Royal Coat-of-Arms.
The Carron Company, established in 1759, and whose ironworks were located in Falkirk, Scotland, held a prestigious Royal Warrant to manufacture goods for the British Royal Family. This explains the lion, the unicorn and the motto 'Dieu et mon droit' on the damper. Such an item would have been installed in one of the many royal households across the UK.
Stamped on the back of the piece is the serial number 884 36. The first set of numbers is an internal Carron pattern or serial number used to denote the specific design. The second pair of numbers denote the width of the item, in this case 36 inches.
The condition of this item is commensurate with its age.
